On Monday, I received a phone call no mother ever wants to get.
It was from my daughter’s camp counselor.
It was a freak accident. I still can’t believe that it happened…or how much worse it could have been.
My daughter was walking with her camp group of about 20 children on their way to the pool. They walked past a lawn mower, trimming the grass on the country club grounds when it happened.
The lawn mower picked up a golf ball hidden in the grass and launched it at the children. It hit my daughter in the stomach.
I don’t need to tell you that it hurt and really gave her a scare! The camp staff took great care of her and called me immediately. They iced it and got her calmed down, and we are so very grateful that after she got over the initial shock, she was completely ok. Because it could have been so much worse.
I hate that my daughter was hit by that golf ball, but can you imagine how much worse it could have been if it hit her somewhere else? If it had struck her face, or her head, or her temple…
I try to focus on the silver lining. Appreciate and marvel at the fact that it hit her somewhere that did not leave any lasting or permanent damage. That’s all you can do right? Look for the silver linings and appreciate them…. because you never know when you might be hit with a golf ball.
