Did you have a good long weekend? If you’re anywhere in the Northeast….or Midwest…or Texas…well I guess about anywhere in the US right now – I hope you are staying safe and warm! (Especially you Southerners not used to this wintery weather!)
We had a ton of snow and the kids had a three-day weekend, so we decided to make the best of it and head to the mountains for a family ski trip! Would that be the equivalent of taking lemons and turning them into lemonade? Taking our snow and turning it into snowmen?⛄ We did pretty good for some first-timers!

How To Treat The Windows In The Heart Of The Home
Is there a room in the home that works harder than the kitchen? Most would agree that the kitchen is the heart of the home and the hub of activity. Not only do we cook our meals and eat in our kitchens, we also make lifetime memories with loved ones.
But the kitchen is also a space of hard surfaces. With counter tops, tiles, appliances, and all the other objects you’ll find in kitchens, it can become a cold and shiny room. This is where a well-designed window treatment can help! Custom Window Treatments can really bring a lot to the (kitchen ) table when it comes to softening the space. Today I am going to share a few ideas for the sometimes-challenging kitchen windows in your design projects!
Mock Roman Valance
The above photo is a kitchen by the talented Rose of Z Domus Designs for a model home at the Fort Dupont community by Rockwell Custom home builder. In this kitchen, we fabricated relaxed mock Roman shades for the dining nook of the kitchen and a straight valance for the window above the sink. These Roman valances are stationary, unlike a Roman shade that functions and moves up and down. These two types of Window Treatments still offer a cohesive look because the colors and fabrics coordinate in the two styles.
Kingston Valances
A more traditional look, yes, but how lovely is this kitchen?! Anyone who knows me has heard me advocate for the return of traditional window treatments. Swags, jabots, and bells make my heart beat a little faster and are just so classic and beautiful in the traditions they represent. This client is also a fan of a more traditional look and was thrilled with the swags and bells on these gorgeous valances.
Tailored Mock Roman Valances
In this kitchen, we installed a roller shade and a tailored mock roman shade on a very unique shaped window. This window will always stick out in my mind because I’ve never encountered another window quite like it. We fabricated the valance with 3 equal pleats and piping on the edges – walls are rarely perfect and the piping helps hide any imperfections and gaps between the wall and the valance! This custom valance was all one piece, and our practice is to always do a dry fit prior to installation to make sure everything is perfect!
