One of our most popular videos was of the motorized patio shades in action.

We love our Instagram community, because we can connect with talented designers and share our projects and installations.

It also allows us to answer technical questions and share our expertise – window treatments can be so complicated! Especially motorization projects.

This motorization video prompted the question, “How do you keep them from blowing in the wind?” So we thought we’d share the details of this project with you, and the solutions for your next motorization project!

These motorized patio shades include aircraft cables on each side of the shade.

The bottom rail of the exterior roller shade is attached to and travels down the cables. The cord is secured to the floor of the deck securing the shade from shifting all over the place on windy days. When in the down position the shade provides protection from bugs, rain, and the sun.

But with this particular installation, the trim on the home’s exterior was preventing the cable from being mounted flush to the side of the home, which would have left an unsightly gap. Oh no!

Our uber-talented installer Tom to the rescue! Tom was able to remove a small piece of the trim, allowing the cable to be installed for form and function.

These lovely clients were thrilled with their patio space. Be sure you are following Z Domus Designs (@zdomus) on Instagram to see more of this gorgeous home.
