Who doesn’t love a beautiful bed canopy? So much more than a decorative element, a canopy transforms the space into a fairy-tale setting, adding drama, elegance, and an oh-so-magical embellishment perfect for any princess.
When our friend Donna of Stonewood Interiors came to us with an idea for a room update that included custom goblet pleat valances for the wraparound windows and a dreamy canopy for the bed, we were ready to sprinkle on a little pixie dust and work our magic to make her vision come to life.
BEFORE: Time for a bedroom refresh
As little girls grow into young ladies, their style changes too. Donna wanted to design a space that was refined yet full of wonder for a girl not quite ready to leave childhood behind. She included high-end touches like custom valances (we added playful bows at each end) and a fanciful canopy trimmed in fluffy white pom poms.
This room gives this young lady the grace to grow up at her own pace. And our accents strike that sweet spot between elegant and fun, blending wide-eyed wonder with newfound sophistication.
Making Progress
Our team got to work sketching out canopy plans by hand, outlining each precise proportion before building began. Every project comes with its own set of challenges, and here, the curved crown molding at the ceiling spelled trouble.
Experience told us that working around it would create gaps in the final design, leaving the canopy valance uneven with the wall behind it.
Never fear! Our lead installer, Lenny, came to the rescue, cutting the molding and leaving the canopy fabric to fit flush against the wall for a tight, seamless finish.
The Result: A Dreamy Bedroom
What a showstopper! This abbreviated canopy, known as a half-tester, may cover only the head of the bed, but it still holds the presence of full splendor. At the top, a crowning valance introduces inverted pleats, allowing the bold floral fabric in pure linen to flutter gently.
Matching draperies frame the sides with floor-to-ceiling panels. Pom pom fringe accentuates the borders, relaxing the royal finery with a hint of whimsy. And behind, a light, crisp linen in blue check hugs the wall, allowing twin reading lights to shine. Can you imagine how blissful sleep would be under this charming little nook? This is what sweet dreams are made of!
We can’t forget the custom goblet pleat valances set below the arch of each window—they truly tie the room together. Once again, the dainty check fabric enhances the dominant floral pattern, this time as a scarf fitted through each pleat and finished in a bow at each end.
It’s not every day we get asked to do a canopy, but when we do, it is always so fun to bring the designer’s vision to life. If you’re considering a custom bed canopy, there are several styles to choose from, including the half-tester used for this project, the Lit à Colonnes, which uses the columns of a four-poster bed to support the canopy and optional curtains, and the Lit à Couronne, which crowns the head of the bed with a rounded canopy, spilling draperies down to the corners (as seen in these sweet twin beds).
